Apex Legends’ Newcastle is a support-heavy knight with a dad bod

Apex Legends

Apex Legends is changing the bracket game with its new hero, Newcastle. The shield-wielding knight brings a very unique kit to the battle royale, which deviates from the existing support legends in very interesting ways. Newcastle could very well become a top pick for supporting players in Apex Legends Season 13, as well as a fan-favorite character thanks to his dad and daddy jokes. We got the chance to catch a glimpse of Newcastle during an in-depth presentation last week, here’s how we think the new legend will shake up Apex games.

Newcastle’s character arc was written by another dad, Ify Nwadiwe from Respawn, who says he wanted a “cool dad representation” in Apex Legends.

Jackson’s status as a former IMC soldier, father and brother from Bangalore, and the man who currently claims to be a famous hero sets the stage for some great stories. How will Bangalore react to her brother’s entry into gaming? Why did Jackson leave IMC and start a new life as someone else? The opportunities for awesome in-game dialogue and events are endless, and players who appreciate Apex Legends’ clever weaving of lore throughout gameplay and season trailers will love this.

Jackson’s story and his Newcastle status are certainly interesting, but it’s his kit that will get people talking. Newcastle is an aggressive support character, a “heroic defender” according to the development team. “This guy had to be someone who could heroically jump into the fray to protect his team, someone who was going to lead that charge, protect their lead, and he’s a guy who wouldn’t leave anyone behind,” says the designer of Devin Weise game. “He’s not afraid to put his life on the line to bring his team back into the fold and get them out of the fire. So we knew the abilities couldn’t fall into that classic bunker defense style, it couldn’t be someone going, “Hey, you come see me” – he has to go. With that style of play in mind, Respawn have given Newcastle a kit that puts defense on offense.

His passive ability allows him to drag downed allies away from melee as he revives and shields them with a wrist-mounted shield that’s as strong as the knockdown shield in your kit. This will give players the confidence to step out into the line of fire and bring a downed player back to cover. His active ability is a moveable shield that can be directed after being placed, again allowing hypermobility behind cover security. And his ultimate ability sees Newcastle leap into the air, pull the shield from his back and slam it into the ground to build a massive fortress-like wall. Enemies near this fast build will be knocked back, while those trying to push will be slowed by an electric barrier, much like Wattson’s.

While many players may feel like another shield character is unnecessary in a meta largely dominated by Gibraltar, Respawn thinks Newcastle are bringing an entirely new style of support to the round table (lol). “Gibraltar has its own issues that we’re looking at very seriously because we want to tackle that shield meta that it brings to the table,” Weise said. “But Newcastle have been designed to make sure that their counterpoint that they bring with the different aspects of the shield is very clear. And you have an option to deal with that, whereas with Gibraltar you can’t break their shield you just push and hope you can survive the 1v1 fight… Newcastle on the other hand its walls are directional meaning you can flank them, you can throw things at them, you can pierce them if that’s the only option you you have on the table.

It looks like Newcastle, whose kit has been worked on and reworked in one way or another over the last two years according to Respawn, is the perfect new addition to the game. He’s a great legend for players who love support but don’t necessarily like to hang back, or for those who have never played support before but are generally very aggressive. While on initial inspection it looks like Newcastle’s abilities will cross paths with other legends, closer examination reveals a hyper-specific kit that meshes well with the existing lineup. After adding some aggressive Legends in Valkyrie, Ash, and Fuse, Newcastle is a great support character that will help round out the meta further. With Newcastle, Respawn is once again showing its dedication to keeping Apex Legends fun and fresh.

Jackson’s story and status as Newcastle are certainly interesting, but it’s his kit that will have people talking. Newcastle is an aggressive support character, a “heroic defender” according to the dev team. “This guy needed to be someone who could leap into the fray heroically to protect his squad, somebody who is going to lead that charge, shield their advance, and he’s a guy who would leave no man behind,” explains game designer Devin Weise. “He’s not afraid to lay his life on the line to bring his team back into the fold and pull them out of the fire. This will give players the confidence to go out into the line of fire and drag a downed player back to cover. His active ability is a mobile shield that can be directed after it’s placed, which again allows for hypermobility behind the safety of cover. And his ultimate ability sees Newcastle leap up in the air, pull the shield from his back, and slam it into the ground to build a massive, fortress-like wall. Enemies in the vicinity of this quick construction will get knocked back, while those who try and push will get slowed down by an electrical barrier, not unlike Wattson’s.
