What do you need:

  • our printable model (you can get it at the end of the tutorial)
  • paper (plain printing paper or thicker printing paper)
  • the scissors
  • coloring supplies if you printed black and white color in version
  • paper clips or mini clothespins (optional)

There is a selection of different conversation cores to suit many needs and circumstances. For real lovebirds, heart cards with “I love You”, “Me & You”, “#love” will be perfect. Want to give a Valentine’s Day card to your friends to celebrate friendship? “Best Friends”, “Girl Power” or “Thank You” will work great, especially the thank you one because you can write all the awesome things about your friend in the card. The thank you card can be applied to almost anyone!

Are you a teacher and want to distribute Valentine’s Day cards to your students? “You rock”, “You are Great”, “Smile” or even a general V-day “XOXO” card will do.

Print the Conversation Hearts Card Templates. We think they perform better on thicker print paper, but plain print paper works just as well.

If you printed the color in (black and white version), now is the time to color it. We like to use markers because they’re bright, but since they’re conversation starters, crayons and colored pencils will do a great job of achieving those pastel colors.

You can color the whole card or just the hearts with text.

Cut out the shape.

Turn it over and write your message. Although the conversation hearts already carry their message, a personalized message inside the opening heart will be much appreciated. You can also skip this step for now and write the message at the end.

Once you have finished your message, turn the template over and fold it along the dotted lines. Make sure the creases are very neat – the sharper they are, the easier it will be to fold the heart of the conversation card.

Now comes the simple folding (may look a little tricky in the photos, so we recommend watching the video tutorial for this one).

In order to get the shape of the heart, you need to push the folds that are not at the border of the conversation heart, inside and between the conversation heart in the front and back. It’s really simple although it can read a bit complicated. The video tutorial makes this part of this DIY V-day card super simple.

Finished? Yes you are! Now, to keep the card securely closed, you can clip it with a paper clip or a mini clothespin.

Once you are done with your message flip the template over again and fold along the dashed lines.  Make sure the folds are extra crisp – the crisper they are the easier it will be to fold the conversation heart card.
