We love all the colors spring brings! Oh and the flowers!

These handcrafted flowers are perfect for Valentine’s Day (the heart shape so versatile) or as a Mother’s Day gift from a child.

They are quite simple to make and have a stunning effect when they open and reveal the message inside.

If you are doing this project with younger children, we recommend using giant craft sticks and making larger heart flowers as they will be easier to cut. Older children can easily make small ones.

Step by step instructions

Paint the craft sticks green. Let the paint dry.

Fold flower-colored construction paper (reds, pinks, and purples work great).

Draw a heart shape with the top of the heart touching the crease (this is important).

Cut out the heart shape but be careful not to cut the crease at the top of the heart (the two bumps). It will cause the heart to open and close like a card.

Cut a smaller heart shape out of yellow paper (you can trace the first heart and cut it a bit to get a smaller shape).

Glue the small yellow heart inside the flower-colored one.

Write on your message.

Apply glue to one end of the craft stick.

Glue the flower in the shape of a heart.

Cut the leaf shape out of green construction paper and glue it to the craft stick.
