ELEX 2 captures all that’s great about Piranha Bytes’ games

Not everyone has played a game of Piranha Bytes, but those who experienced slave labor in the Gothic penal colonies, explored the farmlands of Khorinis in its revered suite, or ventured through the paradise islands from the Risen series will know there’s something special about the German RPG developer’s old-school flavor.

The Essen-based studio hasn’t just been making games for 25 years – they’ve been exclusively doing RPGs this whole time. These guys are veterans, sages, whose first Gothic game thrust us into a rugged 3D world full of danger and hard choices before Morrowind came out and long before Geralt was even a glimmer in his eye. by CD Projekt RED.

Piranha Bytes games have always been ambitious, always evoking a powerful sense of place, even if they weren’t strictly large-scale. So yes, there are modern conveniences like an auto map and fast travel, but you’ll still have to scout towns for those teleporters and chat with people if you want to know where to find shops, inns, and (essentially) trainers. of skills.

ELEX 2 polishes off the rough edges of its predecessors while still feeling like a world that invites you to push it and experience everything from your build to being a complete ass for everyone around you (and the inevitable ripple effects that resulting ). You’ll soon learn that while being a loudmouth in some places is a way to get things done, in others – like the underground city of the tyrannical Morkons – it’ll quickly see you face down.
