How to play Elden Ring multiplayer coop with friends

Elden Ring co-op and multiplayer is a great fun part of the Elden Ring experience, but it’s not the easiest thing to set up, distinct from the Elden Ring and Ash Spirits NPC summons you can use – instead , here we will explain how to play with real people, friends or strangers, in Elden Ring.

The key thing here is that Elden Ring’s co-op multiplayer is quite limited and focused, designed to direct players towards a specific goal, with the two of you working together to achieve it. For this reason, it’s best to get help with bosses and tricky areas, spawning a friend or two to help you through the toughest challenges the game has to offer. With that in mind, here’s how to play Elden Ring co-op and multiplayer with friends, what it does, and the penalties and perks.

To play Elden Ring multiplayer with friends, players will need to go through a few steps first, as co-op has its own limitations to put in place. Elden Ring’s online multiplayer mode has one player who acts as a “finger host”, and everyone else then joins their world as a ghost player, effectively assisting the host in whatever they do.

  1. To play with friends, you will both need an internet connection on your consoles/computers (and whatever subscription service you need to play online).
  2. Once you’ve done that, you both need to open the game menu and scroll down to “Multiplayer”.
  3. Once there, select “Settings” and enter a multiplayer password. It could be anything, but as long as you and your friends get it right and it fits, that’s all that matters. These passwords effectively ensure that you will only see each other, not the millions of other players.
  4. Now that it’s done, anyone who won’t be the host must use a special item marked in the multiplayer menu called the Small Golden Effigy. Aka, everyone but the person who needs help with a boss fight or a tough area should. This will display a message that says “Sending sign of cooperation to summon pool”.
  5. If you don’t have the small golden effigy, go back to the very first area just outside the beached graveyard, looking at the tree sentry. He will be there, leaning against the effigy of the martyr of the region. Speaking of what…
  6. The person who is the host must then find a small statue called an effigy of the martyr, especially in the area they need help with. These are small, common statues with outstretched arms, usually found at dungeon entrances or outside boss arenas.
  7. Interact with it to open the summoning pool, revealing a symbol that will allow you to summon your friends who have used the small golden effigy with matching passwords. You should now be able to bring them!

How the Elden Ring Cooperative Works

Players brought into Elden Ring as Golden Co-op Ghosts are not as powerful as they were in their own world. They have half the number of flasks they normally would, and their stats are usually lowered to prevent two high level players from stomping all the bosses for their lower level friend.

Coop is also triggered with a specific goal in mind – aka, the zone boss. Wherever the host triggers the effigy of the martyr, it makes the whole thing a mission. For example, if the hosts bring players to Stormveil Castle, the goal is to destroy the castle boss, Godrick the Graft. Once done, the mission is over and the Ghosts are sent back to their own games.

Co-op Elden Ring supports up to three players at a time; a Host of Fingers and two golden Ghosts to support them. It’s also not cross-platform, so players won’t be able to brawl with friends on other consoles or computers.

From what we can tell, Elden Ring co-op multiplayer unlocks in Elden Ring at the end of the tutorial, leaving the graveyard stranded in the grassy realm of Limgrave and Midlands. However, we don’t recommend triggering it just yet – multiplayer co-op is objective-based and you should generally be exploring in those first few hours. Still, look for effigies of martyrs and write them down so you know where you can summon allies in a pinch.

For players who are happy to be summoned by anyone, they can use a multiplayer menu item called the Tarnished Wrapped Finger, right next to the small golden effigy. This simply places a golden symbol where the player is standing, a symbol that appears in random player games and can be triggered by them.

However, these symbols cannot be seen until the potential host uses an item in this menu called Furlcalling Finger Remedy – they are invisible and unusable until they do. So if you want to summon allies, use the Furlcalling Finger Remedy and you’ll see symbols left behind by those who used the Ternished’s Furled Finger. Luckily these names are so simple.
