Just How Graphic & Disturbing Is Cronenberg’s Crimes Of The Future?

As far as being graphic goes, Cronenberg’s film includes full frontal nudity (primarily of women) at various points throughout, as well as a few gruesome deaths that can be rather difficult to watch. The film’s disturbing moments will play differently for audiences depending on the level of body horror and graphic images one can take without turning away. As far as body horror goes, however, Crimes of the Future isn’t more disturbing than recent films like Titane or even Men, Alex Garland’s latest feature. That said, much of the film’s grotesqueness is played as though it were a sensual experience. Characters are turned on watching Caprice cut into Saul during their performance. The things a body can endure is a show to be dissected and entertained by.

For fans of Cronenberg’s previous work — Crash, The Fly, Dead Ringers — the graphic images in Crimes of the Future won’t be the worst they’ve seen in the director’s work. Those who might be tuning into a Cronenberg feature for the first time should prepare themselves for some horrific, unsettling scenes that have the potential to turn the stomach. But again, it all depends on what one can tolerate in such films. However, one thing is certainly clear: Crimes of the Future is absolutely not suitable for children as its content is adult-oriented and too grisly for younger audiences.
