Lake Mungo Is One Of Horror’s Best Reviewed (But Least Seen) Movies

Lake Mungo didn’t do much business in Australia and later arrived in the U.S. as part of the After Dark Horrorfest, a now-defunct horror festival that packaged eight genre movies of wildly mixed quality. HorrorFest 4, which Lake Mungo was part of, also featured the likes of ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction and forgotten Clive Barker adaptation Dread. Even with good early reviews, Lake Mungo received little attention, and it’s only with time that the movie’s quality – and regular inclusion on lists of underappreciated horror movies – that it has seen a resurgence.

Lake Mungo’s Rotten Tomatoes score and praise have done little to bring it wider attention, but there are worst fates than to be a great horror movie genre fans recommend to each other. The movie could have served as an affecting family drama, but its additional supernatural angle and some literally haunting scenes make it linger in the memory more intensely, especially when it comes to Lake Mungo’s painful ending reveal.
