More Resident Evil Remakes May Release On PS5 During Capcom Showcase

The remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 may be getting dedicated PlayStation 5 releases alongside Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, potentially as early as the Capcom Showcase scheduled for June 13, according to leaks. Game files added to the PlayStation Network database hint at an imminent launch of the upgraded versions, which Capcom earlier this year confirmed would be coming to the Xbox Series X/S as well.

Remakes have long been a staple of the Resident Evil series, with the original game receiving one just six years after its 1996 launch, but Capcom has more recently been overhauling its classic titles, starting with RE2 and RE3. The trend continues with the recently announced Resident Evil 4 remake, which reimagines its story. Resident Evil 7, however, released in 2017 as something of a series reinvention itself. RE7 and both remakes have been playable on the new consoles with moderate performance improvements, but these rereleases are expected to be more significant upgrades.

The appearance of all three games’ PS5 versions in the PSN database was leaked by PlayStation Game Size on Twitter, an account that tracks the size of new game files and updates. This conveniently comes just days ahead of the Capcom Showcase scheduled for 3pm Pacific on June 13, where the company will be sharing news on a variety of its properties. Although a surprise release is unconfirmed, the PS5 files showing up on the PSN back end signals they will launch soon, and suddenly dropping games or upgrades like these always sparks excitement from fans.

Earlier this year, Capcom announced the three Resident Evil upgrades for PS5 and Series X/S, but did not specify a release window other than later in the year. There were also no details on exactly what said upgrades would bring aside from vague visual enhancements. Perhaps the best news for Resident Evil fans is that all three upgrades will be free for those who already own the PS4 or Xbox One versions. According to PlayStation Game Size, there will also be an upgrade version specifically for the RE7 Gold Edition, which includes all of the game’s DLC.

Current-gen versions of these games will likely occupy the Resident Evil fanbase until the upcoming DLC for Village is available. Similarly, there has yet to be a release date for the long delayed Resident Evil Re:Verse, a multiplayer third-person shooter. Re:Verse did recently receive a new rating, and Capcom’s own showcase seems the most likely occasion to get more news on it and the RE8 DLC. Players know what to expect from Resident Evil 2Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, but a surprise release of their upgraded versions would certainly still be a highlight of the Capcom Showcase.
