Sam Elliott apologizes for calling The Power of the Dog a “piece of s*** Western”

Sam Elliott apologized for the comments on The power of the dog which he did on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast earlier this year, calling the film “a piece of Western shit.”

“I told podcaster WTF that I thought Jane Campion was a brilliant director, and I want to apologize to the cast of The Power of the Dog, all brilliant actors,” Elliott said. Deadline. “And especially Benedict Cumberbatch. I can only say I’m sorry and I am. I am.”

“I wasn’t very articulate about it. I didn’t express it very well,” he continued. “And I said things that hurt people and I feel bad about it. The gay community has been amazing to me throughout my career. And I mean my whole career, before I started in this town. Friends at all levels and all job descriptions until today. I’m sorry for hurting one of those friends and someone I loved. And anyone else by the words I used.

In his original comments, the actor said: “What the fuck is this woman – she’s a brilliant director by the way, I love her work, her previous work – but what the hell is this Damn woman from over there in New Zealand knows about the American West? And why the hell is she shooting this movie in New Zealand and calling it Montana and saying, “It’s like that.” Damn, that rubbed me the wrong way, mate.

He also added: “They are all running around in leggings and shirtless. There are all these allusions to homosexuality throughout this fucking movie.

The film was in the running for 12 awards at this year’s Oscars, including best picture and nods for Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemmons and Kirsten Dunst, and Jane Campion won the best director gong.

The Power of the Dog is available to stream now on Netflix. If you’ve already seen it, check out our list of upcoming movies this should be on your radar in 2022 and beyond.
